Reporting on TikTok
5 min
TikTok presents unique challenges for antisemitism monitoring and reporting due to its video-first format, algorithmic amplification, and younger user demographic.
TikTok's Policies
TikTok's Community Guidelines prohibit content that attacks, threatens, or incites violence against people based on protected attributes including race, ethnicity, and religion. The platform also prohibits hateful ideologies, including antisemitism and Holocaust denial.
How to Report
- Long-press the video or tap the share arrow
- Select "Report"
- Choose "Hate and harassment"
- Select "Hate speech or hateful behaviors"
- Specify the protected characteristic
- Submit
Unique TikTok Challenges
Video content: Antisemitic messages may be conveyed through audio, text overlays, visual imagery, or combinations of all three. Text-based moderation tools may miss content that is primarily visual or audio.
Sounds and music: Antisemitic audio clips are sometimes attached to otherwise innocuous videos, spreading through TikTok's sound-sharing feature. Report the sound as well as the video.
Comments: TikTok comment sections under Jewish-related content frequently contain antisemitic expressions. Report individual comments through the comment's long-press menu.
Duets and stitches: Users can create response videos that add antisemitic commentary to Jewish creators' content. Report these through the standard video reporting flow.
Algorithmic amplification: TikTok's algorithm can rapidly amplify coded antisemitic content to large audiences. Speed of reporting matters more on TikTok than on other platforms.
Reporting Tips
- When reporting video content, specify the timestamp where the violation occurs
- If antisemitism is conveyed through coded language or symbols, explain the code in your report
- Report accounts that consistently post antisemitic content, not just individual videos
- For urgent content (threats of violence), use TikTok's "Someone is in immediate danger" reporting option
